Travis D.S. Cox

Mr. Cox is a partner in the Houston office of Blue Williams, where he represents businesses and individuals in litigation, corporate, and transactional matters across Texas. His practice and experience cover a wide spectrum of subject matters and issues, including business and commercial disputes often encountered by companies in the real estate, construction, energy, petrochemical, oilfield and industrial services, manufacturing, and healthcare industries.

 

Mr. Cox has handled many matters as a first-chair attorney. His priority is to understand the client’s goals and desired endpoint for each case or issue. In addition to defending clients’ rights and enforcing obligations in court, Mr. Cox is formally trained as a civil mediator. This helps him guide clients through alternative dispute resolution when litigation presents business obstacles or would not be cost-effective. Mr. Cox is admitted to practice in all state courts and federal district courts in Texas.

Narrative

Mr. Cox develops close relationships with his clients so he can properly assess the core issues they are facing and work together to accomplish their business goals. His clients trust that he provides candid, strategic advice and acts in their best interest to judiciously navigate complex business and commercial matters in the boardroom and the courtroom.

Mr. Cox helps negotiate contracts and counsel clients in risk management and litigation avoidance—and decisively litigates when disputes cannot be resolved otherwise. Mr. Cox has successfully handled many cases involving breaches of contract and fiduciary duty, fraud, real estate, insurance coverage, product liability, premises liability, toxic/environmental torts, personal injury, and death.

Mr. Cox has experience representing both multinational and closely held corporate clients, and healthcare providers ranging from large hospitals and physician groups to private practitioners. This experience includes matters commonly encountered by clients in the real estate, energy (including upstream, midstream, and downstream distribution), construction, manufacturing, petrochemical, oilfield and industrial services, healthcare, and transportation industries. Mr. Cox has experience representing such clients in contract negotiations and business disputes and advising them on legislative changes and regulatory compliance.

Mr. Cox graduated from the University of Texas with a degree from the Plan II Honors program and certificates in both Business Foundations and Core Texts & Ideas. After college, he received a Dean’s Scholarship to attend the SMU Dedman School of Law. Mr. Cox served as article editor for the International Law Review Association, which published the second-most widely circulated legal journal in the world at the time: The International Lawyer.

In addition to his legal studies, Mr. Cox also studied managerial finance, starting a business, and organizational behavior at the Cox School of Business. Mr. Cox worked throughout most of law school and interned with a highly respected federal judge in the Southern District of Texas before going on to train with in-house legal counsel, private practices, and at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas, where he worked on complex cases involving fraud, kickbacks, and personal injury defense.

Outside of the office, Mr. Cox enjoys spending time with his family at the ranch and on the coast, and rooting for the Texas Longhorns, Houston Astros, Dallas Stars, and Dallas Cowboys.

Representative Work

  • First-chair trial experience defending multinational company against customer in a construction contract dispute; obtained favorable judgment after making opening and closing arguments, cross-examining the plaintiff, and presenting witnesses
  • Obtained $1.75mm judgment in favor of real estate investment company in case against major secured transaction debtor company and its member in the real estate industry
  • Obtained summary judgment piercing corporate veil and awarding all damages and attorney fees to real estate investors
  • Obtained complete and final dismissal of case pending four years against multinational energy company in the Permian Basin of West Texas within merely three months of receiving the case
  • Obtained judgment for over $1.3mm against general contractor in hospital construction case
  • Obtained complete and final dismissal of personal injury claims against multinational and closely-held businesses
  • Second-chair trial experience in real estate and construction cases including voir dire, examination, and arguments
  • Arbitration experience in multimillion-dollar, multi-party complex commercial case with AAA involving alleged breaches of fiduciary duty, fraud, and usurpation of corporate opportunity in the ecommerce and transportation industry
  • Defended energy, trucking, elevator, construction, petrochemical, and real estate companies in multimillion-dollar, multi-party wrongful death, gross negligence, product and premises liability, motor vehicle accident, explosion and fire cases from investigation to resolution
