James has been a practicing lawyer for over a decade. He joined Blue Williams as a partner in the Houston office in 2026. Before becoming a civil litigator in 2024, he worked in immigration defense and criminal defense. He secured legal permanent residency for multiple immigration clients and successfully defended clients facing criminal charges.
James has experience defending against many types of civil lawsuits, including personal injury, premises liability, and violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. He has drafted multiple appellate briefs.

James Magown brings more than a decade of legal experience to his civil litigation practice at Blue Williams, where he joined as a Partner in the Houston office in 2026. James defends clients against a wide range of civil claims, including personal injury, premises liability, and violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, and he has drafted numerous appellate briefs on behalf of his clients.
Before transitioning to civil litigation in 2024, James built a diverse legal foundation in immigration and criminal defense. He successfully secured legal permanent residency for numerous immigration clients and represented individuals facing criminal charges, experience that continues to inform his thorough, client-focused approach to litigation today.
A native Houstonian, James graduated from Bellaire High School, where he served as captain of the tennis team. He spent part of his childhood in Venezuela and is fluent in Spanish, with working knowledge of Portuguese. James earned his Bachelor of Arts through the Plan II Honors Program and a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management, both from the University of Texas at Austin in 2010, before going on to earn his Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law in 2013.
Outside the office, James enjoys playing basketball, singing, playing guitar, and travel photography.
James is licensed to practice before the State Bar of Texas (2013) and is admitted to practice before the Executive Office of Immigration Review (2015).
